Abstract:
In the past ten years, MEMS-based micro- and nanosensors have been intensively and successfully researched for the environmental monitoring in close collaboration with MIT at SMART (Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology). The following sensors will be presented:
  •  Bio-inspiration, bio-mimetic  approach has led to underwater flow micro/nano sensors with better performance for a wide range of possible applications.
  •  Chemical sensor inspired by the shark's ultrasensitive olfactory organs has shown excellent redox repeatability and accuracy for Pb detection down to 0.8 ppb.
  •  2 dimensional airflow sensors have been successfully developed for monitoring air speed with low cost and high accuracy.
  •  Light field imaging spectrometer (LFIS) for atmospheric pollution monitoring by satellite.

Bio:
Jianmin Miao (缪建民)received his bachelor degree in 1985 from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Tongji University,  Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree with distinction in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) from the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. After spending several years in industry for sensor/MEMS development, he joined the Nanyang Technological University in 1998 to establish the Micromachines (MEMS) Centre as the Founding Director.  Professor Miao has collaborated with MIT at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) since 2007 and was a visiting professor at MIT in 2013. He has been a distinguished visiting professor at the Shanghai Jiaotong University since October 2013. He has authored or co-authored more than 400 papers in international journals and conferences, several book/chapters, and holds 25 patents. He is the member of the editorial board of the Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, the Sensors, the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, has served as Chair and Co-Chair of MEMS/nanotechnology international conferences, executive technical committee member of international conferences, including the IEEE-MEMS and Transducers conference. He was invited by several international MEMS/Nanotechnology conferences as plenary speaker, keynote lecturer, and invited speaker. He is also actively involved in MEMS commercialization and co-founder of MEMS startups.
