演讲人信息:Dr. Jordi Garcia

Dr. Jordi Garcia is a professor in the Department of Computer Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC Barcelona Tech. He has a PhD degree in Computer Science (1997) also from the UPC Barcelona Tech. From 2001 to 2004 he was the vice-dean of university extension at the Barcelona School of Informatics (Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona, FIB), and from 2004 to 2010 he was the vicedean, head of studies, also at the FIB. From 2010 to 2013 he was the academic director of the Center of Cooperation for Development. And since March 2015, he is the UPC's Delegate at Tongji University, codirector of the SINO Spanish Campus.

There is about 4ZB of digital data in the universe, and it is expected
to grow by a factor of 10 over the next decade. In the information
society, data is information and information is money. But conventional
technology cannot effectively process these vast amounts of data, and
new paradigms are required. Big Data is a new generation of technologies
and architectures, designed to economically extract value from very
large volumes of a wide variety of data by enabling high velocity
capture, analysis, and/or discovery.

In this talk, some interesting facts about the digital universe will be
presented and the current technological trends to manage Big Data,
including storage, management, processing, and analysis, will be
discussed. This period of "space exploration" of the digital universe
will not be without its challenges. But for the "astronauts" involved,
it represents a unique, perhaps once-in-a-carreer opportunity to drive
growth for their businesses.
