Abstract:
In recent years, networked or distributed virtual environments (VEs) have become more and more widespread with the introduction of 3D accelerators, broadband networks, and faster CPUs. The most noticeable has been rapid growth of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs), where up to hundreds of thousands of concurrent users often engage in virtual adventures. As the number of users and complexity of such virtual worlds increase, how to build the next-generation virtual environments, where millions to billions of people will participate in immersive and interactive 3D environments, becomes an interesting research area that spans across topics such as consistency, interactivity, scalability, persistency, reliability, security, and interoperability.
In this talk, I will describe the background of one of the promising approaches, where scalable peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are utilized to create scalable yet affordable next-generation million-user virtual environments. I will also describe some of the works done at our lab, regarding scalable P2P overlays, state management, and P2P-based 3D streaming, that aim to contribute to the realization of a massive 3D Metaverse usable by millions to billions of people simultaneously.
